During lockdown, Dr. Aled Roberts converted his cellar into a makeshift lab, experimenting with household items like baking soda and brick dust. This led to the discovery of a sustainable, concrete-like material and the founding of Dekiln in January 2021. Frustrated by slow industry uptake, he moved the company to Manchester to bring his innovations to market. Dekiln's latest creation, Eralith, is a low-carbon, oven-baked tile made from 98% recycled materials, with a 94% smaller carbon footprint than traditional ceramic tiles. Drawing on his background in biomaterials, including his invention AstroCrete, a concrete-like material using human proteins and simulated Martian soil, Dr. Roberts blends science and nature to develop sustainable materials. Despite challenges transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship, Dekiln is now poised to scale up its low-carbon tile technology, contributing to a sustainable future in construction and space exploration.
