Team updates
In June we had to bid farewell to our long-time senior engineer, Periklis, who has worked here for the last three years. He has seen the company grow through many changes and has also expanded his expertise with the company. He was a real pillar in the company and we are very sad to have seen him go.
With Periklis leaving we have two permanent colleagues joining (Sara and Meet) and one of our internship students (Arjun) returning for the summer.
Sara will be helping us with our coatings as she brings a wealth of knowledge from her doctorate and time in industry working in advanced materials research, process engineering, manufacturing improvement, and technology scale-up. Her expertise will allow us to scale up consistently and expand our use cases significantly.
Meet has a background in mechanical engineering with years of experience taking products and assembly lines from concept through to production release. He will be in charge of the set up and transition to our scale up plant in Stoke-on-Trent. This is a key step in showing the viability of our product which will help when we are licensing out our technology and fulfilling larger orders.
Arjun is returning for the summer after completing his Materials Science Masters at the University of Manchester and he will be working on experiments focusing on how to cure our tiles quicker. This is a key step in our process as it replaces traditional firing and glazing processes in ceramics. As our tiles require 20 times less energy than traditional ceramic tiles, ensuring they are as strong as or stronger than our industry counterparts is very important.
Company news
The new pilot plant in stoke is part of our scale up process and is less than a mile away from our recycled gypsum supplier. It also has the added benefit of being very close to a large proportion of the UK’s ceramics experts.
Beyond production, Studio DeKiln is also growing as a space in its own right. We have been hosting more of our tile painting workshops using our own sustainable tiles. We hosted Johnson tiles at our studio and then went mobile and were at Venture café located in Sister. Studio DeKiln is in its infancy but has great potential. Being located a five minute walk away from Manchester Piccadilly and on a street with takeaway options and bars it is an ideal location for a hen do or even a company away day.
This is a very exciting time for the company and we can’t wait to share more as we grow and develop as a company. Stay tuned here and on our socials.
